The Babylonians are the new superpower of the world with a mission to gain more territory and assimilate more people. That’s what nations have always done, still do, and always will!!!!!! The Babylonians overrun Jerusalem in 605 B.C. and take the best and the brightest back to the City of Babylon. Daniel, a young Jewish man from a noble family, was taken on the 500 mile trip on the standard traveling route: north along the fertile crescent and then southeast along the Euphrates to modern day Iraq. Abraham had traveled this same route in reverse 1500+ years earlier when he was called to the promised land. The area is called the cradle of civilization… There was nothing like the great city of Babylon in the ancient world. I graduated from Nooksack in 1979. The population of Sumas at that time was between 600 and 700. I went to WSU my first year and moved into a dorm that housed 800 students, more than the population of Sumas in one building! Wow! That’s nothing compared to the changes in Daniels world!

God Has the Final Word. No matter what I say or don’t say, what we believe or don’t believe, how we respond to the cultural shift taking place around us, if we are bold or shy, what our courts and congress decide, who we elect, how we feel ~~ God Has the Final Word. Dan. 7:13-14 are monumental words taking center stage in the book of Daniel and our times. The Bible is clear ~ time has a beginning and end. Daniel has a vision of the coming of Jesus Christ in power, in glory, to complete what was begun by God in the beginning. There is an appointed goal of history. The world as we know it will end. Dan. 7:13-14 is a preview of the end. READ.
You are faced with a monster roller coaster with a 300 foot drop and double loop that pauses momentarily at the peak of the loop. Would you be excited? …. As you stand in line waiting your turn there is an escape route. As soon as you sit in the seat and the attendant fastens the restraints in place, there is something about the CLICK of the bar ~ You are Committed!!! No matter how you feel, no matter how excited you are, no matter your fears or enthusiasm, when you feel the restraints fit across your body, you are in the roller coaster and you have no choice but to face the ride of your life! READ Luke 9:51. Everything is ready. You are committed. No matter your fear or enthusiasm, there comes a point when you are going forward with Jesus. For the disciples, he is going to Jerusalem. “Resolutely” is the word used. As in New Years Resolution: “I resolve to go on a diet.” For us New Year’s resolutions have become a joke, but this is Jesus: can you imagine Him changing his mind? Not a chance. Jesus is resolved. You are invited to go forward with him all the way to Jersualem/the cross. Rubber meet road. READ Luke 9:46! Unbelievable. Jesus has spent considerable energy carefully showing the disciples who he is, his divine nature, his mission of salvation through suffering and death ~ as the rubber meets the road and it is time to go from theory to putting into practice all that they have learned, they fight about who is the greatest. The disciples care more about status than service. Reputation. Competition. They are proving themselves to be selfish mule headed pigs!
When the rubber meets the road is when you test the integrity of the tire... The disciples had a good idea of who Jesus is, but they did not get it meant to submit to him. How often we get good ideas that just don’t work out. I read a true story about a woman who was locked out of her house. She came up with what she thought was a good idea to unlock the door: first she set her house on fire. Then she called the fire department thinking they’d come and unlock the door. Unfortunately for her the police also came and arrested her for reckless endangerment. The disciples thought fighting over Jesus and greatness was a good idea ~ they did not see the inconsistency of what they had just been taught by the Master himself. When we make assumptions about other people we get in trouble, and when we make assumptions about God we get in trouble too. This message is about recognizing our great need and then responding in one of two ways: resolving our needs in our own strength assuming God will bless us, or depending on God through faith and his power.
In today’s scripture, we are in the middle of Luke 9, a chapter defining what it means to proclaim Jesus is the Christ. Jesus pulls back the curtains and reveals in greater and greater depth what it means to follow Jesus, the Christ of God, the chosen one of God to bring salvation to the world. To follow Christ means a life of suffering and sacrifice even to the point of death. It means to pick up your cross and whole heartedly commit what God wants of you, even when it is not your first choice. Then last week, a stark reminder through the transfiguration that Jesus is divine in nature, and to confess Jesus is the Christ is to be changed ourselves as we commit ourselves to the Lord. |

At SACC we believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. Every Sunday the worship service includes a message from the Bible. My words are an attempt to understand and apply the Bible to our daily living. I post weekly sermons and other biblical messages on this page. May you find meaning and hope as you read through each message and seek to hear God's voice. Leave a comment to ask questions or inspire others with your insights. Categories
