"Dada," Pastor Jack Mumford, June 23, '12

[Play recording of my son crying.]

My second son was born 5 months ago and this was the first thing he told me.  I have had many opinions about the cry of a child throughout my life.  Annoying, loud, disruptive, sleep depriving, deafening, non-stop…annoying (it’s worth mentioning twice).  The cries of my very own child are different though.  Not many events will stay with me as vividly as my child’s birthday.  That first cry is the most beautiful noise I could ever hear, sweeter than my wives voice, more demanding than the due dates of school.  God has given this helpless, needy, crying baby so much power over me.

In honor of the incompetence of father’s…I know, I know, I am breaking the sacred trust of men everywhere by declaring there are advantages to incompetency… “I don’t know how to cook,” “but you change diapers so much better…” the incompetence of fathers, from Reader’s Digest: My father was completely lost in the kitchen and never ate unless someone prepared a meal for him. When Mother was ill, however, he volunteered to go to the supermarket for her. She sent him off with a carefully numbered list of seven items. Dad returned shortly, very proud of himself, and proceeded to unpack the grocery bags. He had one bag of sugar, two dozen eggs, three hams, four boxes of detergent, five boxes of crackers, six eggplants, and seven green peppers. – Joan Flood

Yearning for Eternity: a Buried Treasure, Ecc. 3:1-12, Pastor Carl

For several years when I was young the Crouse family went on vacation to the peninsula with the Markham family ~ the beach.  We’d spend hours combing through the driftwood. Harold Markham loved to collect whatever treasures the beach would yield ~ an elusive top prize was a glass float, and an even higher prize was a glass float with the net still attached.  One day as I was searching intently, a glare caught my eye.  It looked like glass, but how many times are you fooled only to discover the sun shining off a pebble.  Or broken glass.  I unearthed what I hoped would be a treasure ~ this is what I pulled out (a glass float with  net).  one of the treasures of my childhood ~ Harold Markham never did find one.  On Ebay I could sell this for $1.50, but to me, offer me $5000 and I’ll turn you down.  Jesus said in Mark 13:44:  “The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field.  When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”

A Front Row Seat: Encouragement, Carl Crouse, Eph. 3:14-21, June 3, '12

Two old Texas cowboys were riding across the range one day when they came upon a herd of buffalo. They paused for a moment to look at those great animals. Then one cowboy said to the other, "Have you ever seen an uglier varmint than that?" The other replied: "Naw, I haven’t. Look at that big ugly head and that mangy hair." Then the two cowboys rode off. At that point one buffalo turned and said to another, "I think I just heard a discouraging word!" [“where never is heard, a discouraging word…”]

There is a great need for encouragement.  / affirmation.  We question ourselves, question our self worth, search for meaning and purpose, compare ourselves to others… Why is it that we can have 100 people compliment us, but then one word of criticism, and that’s what we dwell on? …we spend our lives feeling bad, trying to please others, discouraged, feeling of apathy… what’s the point? why bother?  Lot’s of coping methods… stoic, depression…

    Carl Crouse, Pastor

At SACC we believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God.  Every Sunday the worship service includes a message from the Bible. My words are an attempt to understand and apply the Bible to our daily living.  I post weekly sermons and other biblical messages on this page. May you find meaning and hope as you read through each message and seek to hear God's voice. Leave a comment to ask questions or inspire others with your insights.

In general, the previous Sunday's sermon will be posted by Tuesday afternoon.
