Community Resources in Sumas

The Sumas community has many resources to offer people who who are struggling during the economic downturn.  Listed here are a variety of organizations offering assistance.  To be included in this list, send us an email.

A Watered Garden Family Learning Center

A service organization dedicated to offering educational opportunities to individuals and families that enrich personal growth and develop community well being.  Classes include Spanish, English as a second language, computer skills, citizenship and GED Education.  For information see the website or call 393-9352,

Sumas Library

Part of the Whatcom County Library System, the Sumas Library offers a wide variety of programs and services.  Wi-fi is available.  Located at 451 2nd Street.  Hours are Monday and Wednesday 12:30 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 12 to 4 p.m.  For information see the website or call the branch at 988-2501.  Area residents who cannot visit the library may receive outreach services at their home.  Call the Outreach Department at 384-3150 to request this service.

The Sumas Food Bank

The Sumas Food Bank is open from noon to 3 p.m. Thursdays at The Station youth center, 735 Cherry St.  

Nooksack Valley Food Bank

The Nooksack Valley Food Bank distributes food to those in need living in the Nooksack Valley.  Food distribution is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays at the Everson Presbyterian Church, 204 N. Washington St., Everson.  

Everson Community Services Center

The Everson Seventh Day Adventist Community Services Center distributes free clothing, household items, toys, and baby things received through the generous donations of the people of Everson, Sumas, and Lynden.  The center is open Mondays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 700 Strandell Rd., Everson.  Call for more information or to donate usable items for distribution.  Contact: Cheryl Brown, 988-7420.

Sumas Lions Club

This is a service club that helps provide eyeglasses, scholarships,, hearing aids, and other community needs. Meetings are held the first and third Mondays of each month (except June-August) at 6:30 pm at the Sumas Senior Center on Second Street in Sumas. Contact: Chris Haugen, 988-5711

Everson Lions Club

The Everson Lions Club helps to support charitable projects in the area including: scholarships for Nooksack Valley and Mount Baker High School students, Nooksack Valley and Foothills food banks, Boy Scouts, The Lions Eye Bank, Camp Horizon, the Everson Senior Center, Everson parks, and the Deming and Everson libraries. Meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of the month (September - June) at 6:30 pm at the Everson Senior Activity Center, 111 W. Main Street in Everson.  Contact: Jennifer Perry, 966-4710.
